(CHICAGO) Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle has been elected the first woman and the first African-American to chair the Cook County Democratic Party Central Committee. She replaces defeated Assessor Joe Berrios.
It was a lovefest as other candidates dropped out and Preckwinkle was elected by acclamation.
She immediately re-organized the party into many more committees to expand opportunity plus this, saying “I’m gonna ask people to work harder, to step up!”
The old-timer in the room was Committeeman and Alderman Ed Burke who said, “The old way of doing things that so many of us have relied on in the past needs to change and it’s clear that Toni has the ability to bring people together for those kinds of changes.”
Burke will retain who gets slated as a judge, but not who gets retained as a judge.
As for Preckwinkle’s feeling about being the first woman and first African-American chair, noting “To be a first, it’s kinda fun!”
