(CHICAGO) — Damage caused by storms that ripped though the city overnight was caused by a microburst.
The National Weather Service confirmed Thursday that a microburst caused damage to roofs on Chicago’s South Side.
National Weather Service meteorologist Todd Kluber says a microburst is when the core of the storm hits the ground quickly.
“The difference between a microburst and a tornado is that the microburst always has straight line winds,” Kluber said, while a tornado would have circular wind patterns.
Besides damaged roofs, some residents awoke Thursday to find downed trees. Luckily there were no injuries.
In some suburbs large hail was reported.
