(CHICAGO) At City Hall this afternoon, a raucous City Council meeting has approved millions for the controversial new police academy on the West Side.
Protesters who want the millions spent on the poor instead of a police academy packed the city council galleries and got into a shaming debate with Ald Walter Burnett Jr., yelling “Shame, shame shame!
Ald. Burnett responded, “Shame on you! Shame on you for not being concerned about the elderly! Shame on you who don’t have to live with drug dealers and gangbangers!”
The money for the police academy was approved on a vote of 39 to 2, but the leader of the protesters Ald Carlos Ramirez-Rosa said, “Our fight to end racist policing is far from over. Sisters and brothers, this has just begun.”
