(CHICAGO) Separating children from their parents who are seeking asylum at the Mexican border has become a gigantic election year issue, and a Chicago congressman is at the center of the battle.
Democrats are pushing hard on Capitol Hill to try to embarrass Trump into backing down on separating children from their mothers at the border.
Congressman Luis Gutierrez denunciations are especially biting, saying “There is a certain genuinely cruel kind of evil in separating a child from their mother. They don’t expect anyone on the Republican side of the aisle to say anything because it’s part of the strategy to help them keep their jobs!”
There is a bill in the Senate to prohibit the practice. Illinois Senators Durbin and Duckworth are backing it, but so far it doesn’t have enough votes to pass and President Trump wouldn’t be expected to sign it if it did.
