(CHICAGO) The proposal to replace the name of Balbo Dr. for the civil rights icon Ida B. Wells has stalled at City Hall.

Ida B. Wells Dr was supposed to get a hearing here at the hall in a city council committee, but didn’t.

The mayor has ducked the idea, an Italian American organization is an opponent and it may not have had the votes to advance.

So, co-sponsor Ald. Sophia King is in a compromising mood, saying “I am open to having another street named after Ida B. Wells. I think it has to be an appropriate street, something that celebrates her in a way that she should be.”

Possible alternatives include Lake Shore Drive and Congress Parkway.
