(CHICAGO) The Chicago Tribune is reporting that 73 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, with at least eleven of them killed. The Tribune says 40 of the victims were shot during one seven hour span early Sunday morning.
Police say most of the shootings were gang related. The shooting victims range in age from 11 to 62. Most of the shootings happened on the south and west sides.
The Tribune says at least 1,700 people have been shot in the city this year, fewer than the last two years at this time when violence hit record levels in the city but well above other recent years. There have been at least 300 homicides, according to Tribune data.
President Trump’s attorney, former Republican New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani tweeted about the crime in Chicago over the weekend, criticizing what he called decades of Democratic control.
Giuliani also praised former Chicago Police Superintendent and Mayoral Candidate Garry McCarthy, even though he referred to him twice in the tweet as “Jerry.” Giuliani later corrected the mistake, referring to McCarthy as a “policing genius.”
McCarthy, a former New York City police officer, was with Giuliani during the attacks of September 11th 2001. Earlier this year he told “The Big John and Ramblin’ Ray Show” on WLS, that even though he is critical of President Trump, he will always be friends with Giuliani.
“I’m loyal,” said McCarthy. “And you don’t abandon your friends in spite of their politics. And Rudy Giuliani is a friend of mine and I don’t think I need to apologize for that.”
McCarthy appeared this past Friday on FOX News, criticizing Emanuel for the city’s crime rate. Emanuel’s campaign responded by trying to link McCarthy to Trump. McCarthy has refused to say whether he voted for Trump in 2016.
