(CHICAGO) — There are solutions to Chicago’s street violence but it starts with new leadership for the city, according to Garry McCarthy, the former Chicago Police Superintendent who is vying to unseat Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
McCarthy says there are solutions after another violent weekend that saw at least six people killed and dozens more wounded in gun violence.
“There’s no real leadership in city hall and that’s reflected in everything that happens here,” McCarthy told Big John and Ramblin’ Ray on WLS. “Nothing gets managed. The police department is not being managed they way it was managed a couple of years ago.”
And he says you can’t lay all the blame on the prosecutors.
“The prosecution was in the same place a couple years ago when I was the superintendent. As a matter of fact, about six or eight months ago, didn’t we get stiffer gun laws in the State of Illinois? Weren’t we trotting out and bragging about having some success in Springfield, yet today I’m hearing the same excuses.”
McCarthy says the social economic divide is getting wider under Emanuel’s watch. He says he has offered to help the mayor deal with the city’s crime problems, but hasn’t heard back from city hall’s 5th floor.
McCarthy is one of a handful of contenders running to unseat Emanuel.
