(CHICAGO) — The judge overseeing the trial of Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke didn’t send him to jail Thursday but instead increased his bond for violating court rules when he spoke to the media last week.
In court, Judge Vincent Gaughan said there were nine conditions of Van Dyke’s $1.5 million bail and said that the interviews were in violation of one condition which was to “obey all court orders and processes.”
Van Dyke’s attorneys had argued that their client was protected under his right to free speech, and Judge Gaughan agreed, but said it didn’t apply in this case because the court had issued a decorum order banning Van Dyke and those involved in the case from speaking publicly.
The judge increased the Van Dyke’s bail by $2,000, which the officer quickly posted and was released.
On Monday the judge will begin interviewing potential jurors in the case.
Van Dyke has plead not guilty to the 2014 shooting death of Laquan McDonald.
