(CHICAGO) Taping “Connected to Chicago” for Sunday night at 7 here on WLS, former police superintendent –n ow candidate for mayor Garry McCarthy says Officer Jason VanDyke should take the stand in his own defense at his murder trial for the infamous killing of Laquan McDonald.
McCarthy takes a pass on saying whether he thinks VanDyke was justified taking 16 shots, but he tells me VanDyke needs to tell his jury why he did.
McCarthy: “The officer has to articulate that he was in fear of his life, why he was in fear of his life and then the facts will play out from there. Whether or not he was or wasn’t is gonna be determined by a jury and I dunno who can articulate that except for him. “
Cameron: “And if he doesn’t take the stand, he’s hurting his case?”
McCarthy: “I mean, that’s what I believe.”
McCarthy is also highly critical of the new police consent decree. He says it would actually cause more police misconduct because Sergeants and Lieutenants would have less time to supervise.
