A federal judge has ruled that Congressional Democrats can sue President Trump over alleged violations of the emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution.
The clause says that the President cannot accept gifts or payments from foreign powers. Democrats claim that Trump’s ownership of hotels and golf courses in other countries violates that rule. Trump’s Washington D.C. hotel, which has hosted many foreign leaders.
Trump did not divest his ownership stakes in his businesses after being elected President, instead putting them into a trust controlled by his children.
