An elementary school teacher in Iowa went to a Halloween party last week with co-workers, something that is not out of the ordinary. The issue is that teacher Megan Luloff, a white woman, dressed in blackface for her costume.
People at the party dressed as characters from the movie “Napoleon Dynamite” and Luloff decided she would attend as African-American character Lafawnduh. Photos of the party were uploaded to social media and backlash ensued.
Betty Andrews of the Iowa-Nebraska NAACP was sent the photos and said, “It’s incredibly concerning that she was with a group of people who didn’t say, ‘Hey, this is a problem.’”
“The wearing of blackface is never appropriate in any circumstance by any person,” said Superintendent Art Tate.
The situation is under investigation by the school district.
