The National Health Service (NHS) in England is taking aim at boosting people’s life expectancy among other health goals.
“For too long the NHS has seen itself as essentially the National Hospital Service, with primary care and GPs round the side,” said Health Secretary Matt Hancock. “I want to see it as the health service of the nation, helping people to stay healthier.”
Hancock is urging people to scale back their intake of alcohol, salt, sugar and fat in order to hit a goal of increasing people’s life expectancy within five years.
The new health plan will also tackle child obesity, loneliness, diagnosing cancer in earlier stages and predicting illnesses with technology.
