30 days have come and gone for 10,000 students, and 60 days for 1,000, without receiving their GI Bill stipend which has effectively for some halted their schooling and ability to pay for bills.
Daniel Gorman, an Iraq War veteran, said, “I can’t afford rent. I can’t afford groceries. It’s a lot of emotional strain and aggravation.” He’s now worried he won’t graduate in May of 2019.
The VA estimates 450,000 veterans may have been subject to some type of error in payments.
A VA spokesperson said, “Essentially, the law requires a 50-year-old IT platform that was designed to do the equivalent of basic math to instead perform something akin to calculus in short order.”
