(CHICAGO) A Chicago Police officer is recovering after being shot during a traffic stop on Chicago’s South Side late Tuesday morning.
A 6th district tactical officer and his partner stopped a driver near 87th and South Ashland for suspicious behavior. Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says when the suspect ran off, “The officer started to give chase while his partner officer went in front to cut the offender off. At that time, the offender turned, pointed a weapon at the officer. The officer and the offender exchanged gunfire,” said Superintendent Johnson.
The officer was struck in his back but was wearing his bulletproof vest and is expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect, who was shot in the neck, was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
A gun was recovered at the scene.
All officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for 30 days as the Civilian Office of Police Accountability investigates.
