(CHICAGO) The city elections are turning into a full-employment-plan for lawyers.
There are so many candidates for mayor and aldermen, there could be a few hundred challenges to their petitions. So many candidates will be trying to knock their opponents off the ballot charging fraud or various technicalities, Marisel Hernandez, who chairs the election board, has hired 50 lawyers to hear the challenges.
“I clear my schedule. No vacation, no other priorities except for the Board of Election hearings. From the second week of December thru the end of January we are available anytime of the day. We could even convene on weekends if we need to in order to get these cases out.
WLS: Are you going to get a family Christmas this year?
Hernandez: Hardly, but I think we’ll manage to get one.”
The only winners for sure in all of this are the lawyers.
