Queens, New York was not attacked by aliens Thursday night. At least that’s the word from police and fire officials, who say the mysterious blue lights in the sky were the result of a transformer explosion — and not the other way around.
In an advisory issued early Friday morning, the New York Police Department reported, “The lights you have seen throughout the city appear to have been from a transformer explosion at a Con Ed facility in Queens. The fire is under control.”
Police and fire officials on Thursday were flooded with phone calls from panicked residents who saw blue lights hovering over Queens, Manhattan and parts of New Jersey after they heard an explosion and many lost power. Many believed the lights, which Con Edison now says resulted from a “sustained electrical arc flash,” were responsible for the 9:15 p.m. blast and subsequent outages.
In an attempt to quash residents’ fears of an alien attack, the NYPD tweeted, “Confirming incident in Astoria was result of transformer explosion. No injuries, no fire, no evidence of extraterrestrial activity.”
