In a historic move, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday revealed plans to provide guaranteed health care to every resident of the city — including people who are in the country illegally.
The new program, called NYC Care, will be available to everyone in Manhattan and its five boroughs, regardless of existing medical conditions, ability to pay or immigration status, de Blassio says. It will cover costs for medical, mental health and substance abuse issues, he adds. Currently, about 600,000 New Yorkers are uninsured.
“No one should have to live in fear,” de Blassio says. “No one should go without the health care they need. Health care is a human right. In this city, we’re going to make that a reality. In this city, we’re taking that ideal and putting it into practice.”
