Although a blast of Arctic air this week has made for chilly temperatures in portions of the midwestern and northeastern U.S., meteorologists are warning the worst is yet to come.
The polar vortex is expected to work its way down to the upper Great Lakes over the weekend, resulting in “even harsher conditions” for people in the Northeast and Midwest, AccuWeather reports. The chilly temperatures are expected to dip 20 to 40 degrees below normal, resulting in an increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia in people and animals by the middle of the week.
“The end of January will bring the coldest air of the season for the Midwest and rival the Arctic blast from earlier this week as the coldest in the Northeast,” Meteorologist Paul Pastelok says.
