The governors of Washington, Oregon and Idaho have declared states of emergency as the number of measles cases in the Northwest continues to climb.
So far, 31 cases have been reported, most of which are in southwest Washington, just across the river from Portland. Health experts have compiled a list of more than three dozen locations where people may have been infected, including Portland International Airport, a Portland Trail Blazers game, an Amazon Locker location, a Costco and an Ikea.
A simple cough or sneeze can expel the measles virus into the air, where it can linger for up to two hours while it waits for a host to infect. Health officials say 90 percent of unvaccinated people who come into contact with the virus will contract the disease.
