Despite a partial government shutdown that lasted for much of the month, the U.S. economy added 304,000 jobs in January, according to the Labor Department.
The shutdown didn’t necessarily affect that number as furloughed federal workers were counted as ‘temporary layoffs’ rather than unemployed.
In fact, the shutdown might have increased the number of jobs added as furloughed workers sought out part-time jobs.
The unemployment rate ticked up slightly in January, from 3.9 to 4.0 percent, while wages rose 3 cents on average.
