(CHICAGO) “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett is now considered a suspect “for filing a false police report” about a January 29th attack in downtown Chicago and a case against him is being presented to a grand jury.
Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi also says Jussie Smollett’s attorneys met with prosecutors and detectives Wednesday afternoon.
Reaction to the developments from two of the candidates in the race for Chicago Mayor.
Former Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy tells the John Howell Show, “Absolutely he should be charged – prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
During a Chicago mayoral debate on WLS-AM 890 Wednesday afternoon, Jerry Joyce says, “If this went down the way they’re now saying it went down it would be – shame would be an understatement. Given how much resources have been spent on this, how many man hours detective-wise, given the violent crime that is not being solved throughout our city, the resources that could have been into that, you know, certainly financially he should be responsible.”
Chicago’s top prosecutor recused herself from the Smollett investigation.
A spokesperson for Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx says the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” because Foxx had conversations with one of the “Empire” actor’s family members and “facilitated a connection” with the police department.
Foxx’s first assistant, Joe Magats, is overseeing the case.
