(CHICAGO) Alderman Ed Burke is trying to get re-elected while he’s charged with attempted extortion and Congressman Chuy Garcia says Burke has dropped a racist mailer in the white ethnic part of his ward.
The 11th hour mailer features a room full of challenger Tanya Patino’s predominately Hispanic campaign workers under a headline that says “This is what change looks like.”
She says it’s a “disgrace” and Garcia says:
“It reminded me of the 1983 campaign when Harold Washington had an opportunity to be mayor when machine politicians banded around the candidacy of Bernie Epton and launched a campaign “Before it’s Too Late.”
Burke doesn’t respond to Garcia’s many attacks because he’s thought to be running substantially ahead of his challengers.
