(CHICAGO) Fiat Chrysler Automobiles says it is adding jobs in Detroit but cutting them northwest of Chicago.
FCA says it plans to roughly double its hourly workforce in Detroit as part of a $4.5 billion investment that will add about 6,500 jobs in the city and surrounding suburbs to build all-new or next-generation SUVs.
Meantime, northwest of Chicago, the Belvidere Assembly Plant where Jeep Cherokees are made is losing one of it’s three 10-hour shifts and laying off almost 1,400 workers starting May 2nd.
Some 5,400 people work at the Belvidere plant and FCA says the move is to better align production with global demand.
