* A high school wrestler in Colorado forfeited a match and lost his chance at the state wrestling tournament. The reason? His opponent was a girl.
* Brendan Johnston was set to face Angel Rios in the 106-pound division but instead dropped out, telling the Denver Post he meant no disrespect but was “not really comfortable” with the situation, saying “I don’t want to treat a young lady like that on the mat”.
* In fact, Johnston had been in this exact position before. He only lost six matches all year, and four of them were forfeits to Rios.
* Rios ended up placing fourth in the tournament while another girl, Jaslynn Gallegos, finished fifth. Rios plans to keep wrestling in college.
