A Nebraska county will have to pay a $28M judgement to six people wrongfully convicted in a 1985 homicide.
On Monday, the US Supreme Court rejected Gage County’s appeal, effectively upholding the jury verdict.
The so-called “Beatrice (Bee-AT-tryce) Six,” spent more than 75-years combined in prison for the rape and murder of Helen Wilson before DNA evidence cleared them in 2008. Wilson’s death has been linked to another man who died in 1992.
Gage County has been looking for ways to come up with the money including raising taxes and seeking a state legislative bill allowing them to increase taxes even more than allowed.
