In a sudden and surprising move, FDA chief Dr. Scott Gottlieb has announced he’ll resign from the job next month.
Gottlieb, who was appointed to the position in 2017, is reportedly stepping down to spend more time with his family.
During his time with the FDA, Gottlieb focused efforts on battling the opioid epidemic, cutting down on teen vaping, and speeding up the approval process for generic drugs.
Gottlieb was well-liked in Washington and the announcement came as a surprise to many. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar called him “an exemplary public health leader.”
