It turns out the famed Alcatraz prison might not have been so escape-proof after all.
Using ground-penetrating radar and laser scanning equipment, archaeologists have discovered a series of tunnels and underground buildings beneath the island penitentiary. However, the underground network wasn’t built by the former occupants of the now-closed facility; researchers believe the prison was built over a Civil War era military fort.
“This really changes the picture of things,” says archaeologist Timothy de Smet. “They weren’t erased from the island – they are right beneath your feet.”
Alcatraz Prison opened in the 1930s, during the height of prohibition-fueled mob wars, housing such famous criminals as Al Capone. It closed down in 1963.
