It used to be that a school emergency drill involved rounding up the students and escorting them in orderly fashion to a safe place. But times have changed.
A group of Indiana elementary school teachers learned this lesson the hard way when they took part in an active shooter exercise that proved to be a little too real for their tastes. Now the group has filed a grievance with the Indiana State Teachers Association, saying many of them suffered injuries when White County Sheriff’s deputies shot them with pellets.
“The teachers were terrified, but were told not to tell anyone what happened,” the Teachers Association tweeted, adding that many of the participants were “killed” execution-style. “Teachers waiting outside that heard the screaming were brought into the room four at a time, and the shooting process was repeated.”
As a result, several of the participants ended up with bruises and welts, with one teacher saying a pellet had broken through her skin, leaving her bleeding. “They told us, ‘This is what happens if you just cower and do nothing,’” the teacher says. “They shot all of us across our backs. I was hit four times. It hurt so bad.”
