In a surprising development, one of the world’s fastest shrinking glaciers has started to grow again.
In 2012, scientists discovered Greenland’s Jakobshayn glacier was receding at a rate of 1.8 miles and thinning by nearly 130 feet every year. But a NASA study released Monday found the mass of snow and ice has actually grown over the past two years — at the same rate it had been shrinking.
“That was kind of a surprise,” says scientist Jason Box, who says the glacier will eventually begin shrinking again. “We kind of got used to a runaway system. The good news is that it’s a reminder that it’s not necessarily going that fast. But it is going.”
