New Mexico has joined the growing list of states that are pledging their Electoral College votes to the popular vote winner.
This week, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed off on legislation that would grant the state’s 5 electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate who wins the nationwide popular vote.
New Mexico becomes the 14th state to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which now accounts for 189 votes total. But the rule won’t go into effect unless enough states sign on to account for 270 votes – enough to clinch an election.
