Texas will no longer allow clergy to attend death row executions, in response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling this week.
The case centered around death row inmate Patrick Murphy, who claimed his religious freedoms were violated because the state wouldn’t allow his Buddhist spiritual advisor to accompany him to the execution chamber.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court sided with Murphy and blocked his execution. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice responded by banning all clergy from the execution chamber and forcing them to watch from the viewing room instead.
