Chicken nuggets are a staple of kids’ diets and people haven’t stopped having kids, so why are sales of the dippable bites falling across the US? According to the NPD Group, chicken nugget sales dropped three percent in the third quarter of last year.
CNBC points to a trio of issues including more health-conscious eaters, media attention and competition.
While the pink slim controversy from a few years ago didn’t help, the network says consumers are now into chicken strips, believing they are a healthier and more adult alternative. Sales of strips jumped 16 percent in the same time period.
Despite the drop-off, nugget sales still outpace strips, selling 2.3 billion servings vs 1.5 billion in the measured year ending September 2018.
