Scammers pretending to be from the Social Security Administration have managed to bilk millions from unsuspecting victims, says the Federal Trade Commission.
While previous schemes have been outed, the FTC warns against new tactics.
In one instance, the Caller ID was spoofed, with the person on the other end of the phone saying a warrant was out which could be cleared by paying in gift cards.
Seventy-six thousand have told the agency about the scam, which has netted up to $19 million from targets for the year ending March 31.
