Japan’s Emperor Akihito began his abdication ceremonies Tuesday morning to make a spot on the Chrysanthemum Throne for his 59-year old son. The new Reiwa, or “beautiful harmony” era will begin once Crown Prince Naruhito becomes Emperor.
Later today, the final ceremony for the 85-year old Emperor will include an ancient sword and jewel prized by the Emperor’s family. While the ceremony will be private, crowds are expected to gather at the palace.
The Emperor said in 2016 that he would soon step down due to his age and health. This is the first time a Japanese Emperor has abdicated from the throne in two centuries.
