The SAT exam is preparing to add an ‘adversity score’ that weighs a student’s cultural and economic background when calculating its score.
The ‘adversity score’ will weigh 15 different factors including the poverty level and crime rate of the student’s neighborhood and the quality of their high school. Students would not see their score but it would be available to universities when reviewing a student’s application.
But some are protesting the change, saying students should be admitted based on individual merits and nothing more.
About 50 colleges including Yale University are already using adversity scores and 100 more will implement them this fall.
