Beginning today, California residents will have to pass a background check before buying ammunition.
California is the first state in the U.S. to pass such a requirement, which reportedly sent gun owners flocking to stores over the weekend to stock up before the new law took effect.
Under the new law, residents who are already in the system will have to pay a $1 processing fee for a ‘spot check’ each time they buy ammunition.
California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country, with a mandatory 10-day waiting period and restrictions on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines.
