Wanda Vazquez, Puerto Rico’s justice secretary, was sworn in Wednesday to become the U.S. territory’s third governor in less than a week.
The swearing in ceremony was held late in the day, after the Supreme Court ousted Governor Pedro Pierluisi, ruling his appointment — by the previous governor, Ricardo Rosello — was unconstitutional. In a statement that explained the ruling, the Supreme Court noted, “It’s unconstitutional to allow a Secretary of State to become Governor without having been confirmed by both legislative chambers.”
The court also pointed out that in accordance with Puerto Rico’s Constitution, the secretary of state is next in line to fill a vacant governor’s seat.
