A New York doctor is facing up to 59 years in prison after he was caught selling illegal opioid prescriptions from his car and an abandoned Radio Shack store.
Dr. George Blatti was taken into custody Wednesday following an investigation that began when authorities noticed he was writing an “unusually high number” of prescriptions, prosecutors say. Over the past five years, the 74-year-old reportedly prescribed more than 1.8 million doses of opioids, according to the New York District Attorney’s Office. At least two of his prescriptions resulted in overdoses; one of which was fatal, officials say.
“The defendant allegedly wrote multiple prescriptions for dangerous opioids and amphetamines in exchange for cash,” says DA Madeline Singas.”Based on our investigation, Blatti was not operating a legitimate medical practice, did not examine his customers and was selling scripts to drug-addicted individuals in parking lots across Nassau County.”
