Virginia Lawmakers Repeal Centuries-Old Law Against Cursing In Public

You’ll no longer have to watch what you say in Virginia after legislators voted Wednesday to repeal a centuries-old law prohibiting cursing in public.

When passed back in 1792, those found in violation were subject to an 83 cents fine. Today you could be slapped with a misdemeanor and potentially asked to shell out up to $250.

Previous attempts to remove the rule from the state code had failed each time since the measure was first introduced in 2016.

Gov. Ralph Northam has indicated that he will sign the repeal, which would go into effect on July 1st, with a spokesperson noting, “It’s past time we swore off the antiquated policies of the past.”
