Speaking to Anderson Cooper in a 60 Minutes interview that aired Sunday, Bernie Sanders defended Fidel Castro and Cuba, noting the communist country’s social welfare programs.

“We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know?” started off the current frontrunner for the 2020 Democrat party nomination.

“When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?” asked Sanders.

Several Republicans took issue with the self-described Democratic socialist’s comments, including his Senate colleagues Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Marco Rubio.
