So called “D.C. Sniper” Lee Boyd Malvo’s quest to be paroled came to an end Monday when Virginia’s governor signed off on a law that changes the rules for juvenile sentences in the state.

The new law, signed early Monday by Governor Ralph Northam, makes prisoners who were convicted before they turned 18 eligible for parole in 20 years. Malvo was 17 when he and another man were convicted of killing 10 and injuring three in a three-week shooting spree in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. At his 2002 sentencing, Malvo was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

While Malvo’s life sentence remains in effect, the new law means he’ll be considered for parole in 2024. Whether that happens is anybody’s guess; he’s also been saddled with six sentences of life without parole in Maryland.
