New York Increases Fine for Social Distancing Violators to $1,000

As the number of New York’s coronavirus cases continues to climb despite social distancing orders, the state’s governor has doubled the $500 fine for people who don’t comply.

“It’s not about your life,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said Monday while announcing the $1,000 fine. “You don’t have the right to risk someone else’s life.”

Cuomo’s announcement came as the New York health officials revealed 8,658 new coronavirus cases, bringing the state’s total to 130,689. As of Monday, 4,758 New York residents have died from the virus across the state, up from 4,159 on Sunday.
