Twelve New York residents are homeless after a massive landslide over the weekend left their homes dangling over the edge of a newly-formed crater.
The harrowing incident happened Sunday in Waterford, Fire Chief Donald Baldwin says. Although the event “had the potential for significant injuries,” everyone in the area managed to escape unharmed, Baldwin says. After seven homes were initially evacuated, the residents of four of them were allowed to return home. However, the remaining three — which housed the 12 displaced people — have been deemed unsafe, according to Baldwin.
What’s worse is the landside is still in motion, Baldwin reports, although investigators have not yet determined whether it will affect more residents. They also haven’t figured out what caused the ground to fall away, they say.
