A West Virginia man is behind bars after he killed his 72-year-old neighbor by gouging out his eyes in a dispute over a rooster, police say.

Lashmeet resident Richard Ellison, 47, is facing a murder charge in connection with the incident, which occurred Sunday after Ellison got upset because neighbor Benny Foutch’s rooster was too loud, his arrest report indicates. “He went up there and killed the rooster first and then he killed the deceased,” says Mercer County Sheriff’s Detective M.S. Horn. “The gouging out of his eyes appeared to be his cause of death.”

When detectives interviewed Ellison, he told them “Lucifer made him do it,” his arrest report indicates. He’s being held on $200,000 bail.
