(CHICAGO) — Gov. Pritzker Wednesday announced that the state will implement a mask mandate for school children from pre-school though 12th grade. The governor expressing that he had been hopeful that the majority of school districts would vote in favor of masking, following CDC guidance but he says districts aren’t moving fast enough.

The state says COVID numbers are on the rise and are 10 times what they were since the summer low and that hospitalizations are up two times since that low.

The governor is also mandating that state employees at congregate settings, like the state veteran homes and state run healthcare facilities, be vaccinated. He says he is still negotiating with labor unions. The governor is also mandating a universal mask policy in all long term care facilities in Illinois including private ones.
