Violent Weekend in Chicago: 11 Dead, 26 Wounded

(CHICAGO) — The Sun Times reports that 11 people were killed and 26 others were wounded in weekend street violence.

Among the wounded are two teen boys who were part of one of multiple mobs that flooded Chicago on Friday and Saturday night.

Police say the boys, 16 and 17, were among the large unruly mob that gathered in the 100 block of East Washington Street about 9 p.m. when shots were fired. Both suffered minor injuries and were listed in good condition.

Nine adults and six teenagers were arrested in connection with the mob that saw people streaming into the streets, at one point kicking passing cars, breaking into vehicles and setting them on fire.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the behavior “reckless, disrespectful and unlawful,” and called out the parents and guardians.

She said she has been in communication with CPD leadership and they have assured her “that they will make the necessary adjustments to address these teen trends issues as we move into the summer months.”

In a statement, Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson said that though he does not condone the “destructive activity” that took place downtown, it was not constructive to “demonize youth who he said have been starved of opportunities in their own communities.”

Former Top Cop Gary McCarthy told the Steve Cochran Show on WLS that he is concerned about what lies ahead for the city as well as the Chicago area saying that, “this is the anarchy and lawlessness that’s going to spread throughout the region.” He says that what happens in Chicago effects everywhere.
