Liverpool police said a driver was arrested Monday after driving a vehicle into a crowd of fans celebrating the city’s soccer victory.
Multiple pedestrians were hit by the vehicle during a parade for Liverpool’s soccer team, which won the Premier League title.
A YouTube post purported to show video of an SUV ramming into people.
“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. “My thoughts are with all those injured or affected.”
A police spokesman confirmed people had been hit by a car, and added: “We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city center,” according to the Liverpool Echo.
The media outlet said photos showed a large number of emergency services vehicles at the scene.
“We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street,” police said, the Echo reported.
“The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained.
“Emergency services are currently on the scene.”
