(CHICAGO) — Local reaction has been coming in after the assassination of political commentator and head of Turning Point, Charlie Kirk.
Gary Rabine, a one time gubernatorial hopeful in Illinois, helped Kirk get Turning Point off the ground. He says Kirk was one of a kind.
“His message was a simple message, right? But his intelligence, his crazy intelligence and his grasp of history is what was his tool to debate anybody on why God and America and family are so important,” Rabine told the Ray Stevens Show on WLS AM 890.
As for security, Rabine says Kirk did have a security detail but he wanted to be among people.
“He was everywhere and he was never going to not be around people and the people that he was inspiring. He was a guy that wanted to be close to kids and people and show his love,” Rabine said. “So yeah, this is bigger than many people think.”
U.S. Rep. Darrin LaHood (R-Peoria) released a statement saying in part, “The murder of Charlie Kirk was a heinous act of political violence that has become too common in our country. We must ensure the perpetrator is caught and held fully accountable for this horrific crime.”
Kirk grew up in the Chicago suburbs and attended Wheeling High School.
