(CHICAGO) — As high school students across Chicago and Northern Illinois prepare for the excitement of Homecoming dances, games, and celebrations, the Better Business Bureau is issuing an alert: scammers and shady businesses are ready to exploit the moment.
“Homecoming should be a time of celebration, not regret,” says Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the BBB. “Unfortunately, the rush to find the perfect outfit, book a limousine, or snag last-minute deals can lead to costly mistakes. Scammers know this—and they’re counting on it.”
From fake websites selling dresses and accessories to unreliable limo services that vanish after payment, the BBB is seeing a rise in deceptive practices targeting teens and families during this season.
Top Homecoming Scam Risks:
• Limo Letdowns: Some companies promise luxury transportation but fail to show up or deliver subpar service. Always verify credentials, read reviews, and confirm details in writing.
• Counterfeit Clothing Sites: Social media ads may lead to fraudulent websites offering designer dresses at unbelievable prices. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
• Pop-Up Retailers: Temporary vendors may sell low-quality or knockoff items with no return policy. Stick with trusted retailers and check BBB ratings.
If you rent clothing for the evening, there are a few things to keep in mind, whether you’re renting online or in person.
• Quality: Check that the clothing is in good condition. Look for any signs of damage or wear and tear that could affect your comfort or safety. You don’t want to be charged for damage caused by the previous renter.
• Sizing: It’s essential to ensure that the item fits well. Many rental companies will have size charts and measurements available, so be sure to take accurate measurements.
• Return policy: Understand the rental company’s return policy before renting clothing. Some companies may charge additional fees for late returns or damage to the item, so it’s essential to read the fine print and understand your obligations as a renter.
BBB Tips on Limo Services to help make it a perfect night:
• Do your research and choose a reputable limo company. Visit BBB.org to evaluate the business’s online profile as well as any reviews that scammers may have posted. Book early, whenever possible.
• Before signing a contract, read the fine print. Look for overage charges and ensure the contract includes all event details, such as pick-up and drop-off times, itinerary, car make and model, and the number of travelers.
• Get a copy of the contract and receipts for all payments made.
• If a deposit is required, determine how much it will be and whether it is refundable should you need to cancel, and get refunds or cancellation policies in writing.
