(CHICAGO) — Mayor Brandon Johnson’s $16.6 billion spending plan was dealt a major blow on Monday as it failed to make it out of the finance committee.
Alderman voted 25-10 against the mayor’s tax package. The vote came after repeated efforts by Johnson allies to delay a vote.
The key concern for many alderman is Johnson’s $21 per month employee head tax on large businesses in the city. City council members are concerned that a move like that would push businesses out of Chicago and would discourage businesses to locate in the city.
After the vote Johnson vowed to veto any budget that includes a property tax hike. Other no starters he says are any increase in garbage collection fees, or a reinstatement of the 1-percent grocery tax grocery tax.
